Rainy day crafting: Make a rainbow with us!
Rain or shine, our week of weather-themed curriculum is always a blast. We painted with watercolors in art, built tornados in a bottle in our STEAM garden, made rainbow toast in cooking, and set up a high jump for “puddle-jumping” outside.
(If that sounds like fun – and it really was so much fun! – take a peek at our upcoming summer camp schedule. One of our summer camp themes is all about weather!)
This simple and sweet rainbow craft was also a fun parent-led activity in our art station during the week. It gave students the chance to practice fine motor skills by drawing with markers, and on hand strength and coordination by using a spray bottle - skills they will use for writing in the future!
Here is a mini tutorial to make one with your child at home.
Supplies to gather:
Coffee filters
Color markers
White paper (to cut into cloud shapes)
Cotton balls
Googly eyes
Washable glue
Instructions:
Draw rainbow colors on a coffee filter
Spray the colors with water using a spray bottle to create a blended effect
Glue on decorations - add cotton balls for clouds or a cloud shape cut out from paper, add googly eyes to make a face.
Easy peasy! Now a colorful rainbow friend is ready for its place on your fridge. And if you don’t end up with a cute craft at the end that’s ok too! Perfection? We don’t know her.
When crafting with little ones, try not to get hung up on the end result and instead follow your child’s lead to see what creative spin they might come up with. Our students loved using the spray bottle to see what would happen if the coffee filters got drenched and there were lots of giggles while taking turns scribbling with each color marker as fast as they could.
At Broadmoor we’re all about the process so if your kiddos are making a mess and having fun along the way then you’re probably doing it right. Happy crafting!
