Our Broadmoor Community
Broadmoor families make our school go round. Joining a cooperative preschool offers a unique experience to be directly involved in these impactful early years of your child’s education and growth.
Co-op members participate in the classroom alongside trained teachers, observing as the children learn, gaining skills in handling different situations, and learning developmentally appropriate ways of meeting their child’s needs. Our school provides a safe place to examine parenting techniques and learn from others in a non-judgmental way.
Broadmoor is also a place of friendship, offering opportunities for parents to meet, share experiences, and find camaraderie and community during this season of parenting. Many of our families return as alumni with younger siblings and keep in touch with each other over the years.
It takes a village to nurture our children as they grow. At Broadmoor, we are building that village together.
Membership Commitments
As a parent-operated cooperative, every family participates in the administration and maintenance of the school. Our members commit to the following responsibilities:
Work one school day per week alongside one of our directors.
(PM Class families also commit to working one Monday per month in addition to their regular work day.)Plan and implement curriculum for our second and third trimesters.
Attend all required Parent Education Meetings : 2 Tuesdays per month 7–10 pm
Fulfill the commitments of your committee job. Typically a few hours of work each month.
Complete 3 hours of school maintenance each trimester.
Parent Education
Parent Ed nights are an integral part of our parent nursery school program. Twice a month, Broadmoor hosts a mandatory learning session for all participating parents. These evenings bring our parents together to discuss observations from our children’s classes, learn from various guest speakers on topics related to preschool parenting and education, and foster connections with each other. Previous topics have included motor skill development, supporting neurodivergent children, parenting and social justice, and TK and kindergarten readiness. Combined with our day programs, parent education strengthens our sense of community and provides parents with a richer understanding of themselves and their children.
FAQs
-
Play is the cornerstone of early childhood and the way in which children naturally learn about themselves and the world during this period of profound development and growth. Prioritizing play in the preschool setting further benefits a child’s development of language skills, creativity and imagination, social-emotional skills, positive attitude toward learning, and motor skills. Through play, our curriculum allows students to develop skills in communication and problem-solving that they will take with them into kindergarten and the years beyond.

While joining a cooperative preschool can seem overwhelming at first, participating parents find being in the classroom very rewarding (and fun!) and a learning experience for both the child and parent alike. All members attend a mandatory orientation at the beginning of the year to learn about our rules and routines, get familiar with the classroom, and learn more about our teaching approach. During their work day, each parent will be assigned to a station and will have an info card with to-dos for set up and clean up. Our directors provide guidance and feedback throughout the year as parents find their groove in the classroom and with the students.

We know that planning curriculum will be new to most of our parents and we do our best to make it a fun and creative activity. The directors will plan the daily curriculum for the first trimester, giving parents the opportunity to see different kinds of activities and get experience in each station. For the following trimesters, we work together during our Curriculum Planning nights at Parent Ed, during which we discuss how to put together a plan, share ideas, and review available materials and supplies. Participating parents will know weekly themes and their stations ahead of time. Our directors are also always available to give feedback and provide inspiration.

Our committees include Curriculum, Parent Ed, Membership, Community/Fundraising, Maintenance, and Classroom Aid. During the application process you will have an opportunity to share any special interests or skills and our Membership team will provide you with a committee assignment. Committee jobs typically require a few hours of work each month.

Outside of coaching students to use the bathroom, our directors do not change diapers or provide hands-on assistance with toileting. However, we understand that potty-training can be a work in progress and that not all children are ready at this age. If you have concerns about your student’s readiness for potty training and would like to participate in our program, please contact us to discuss a plan.
